Infant RSV Vaccine FAQ

When is RSV season?

October 1 - March 31

Who is eligible for the infant RSV vaccine?

The infant RSV vaccine, Beyfortus, is approved for babies who meet all of the following criteria:

  • Newborn - 8 months old
  • Born during their first RSV season, or born outside RSV season and now entering their first RSV season
  • Mother did not receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.

Children up to 24 months old who remain at high risk of severe RSV disease through their second RSV season are eligible as well.

Who is considered high risk for their second RSV season?

Children ages 8-24 months are considered high risk if they meet the following criteria:

  • Chronic lung disease of prematurity requiring medical support any time during the 6 month period before the start of the second RSV season
  • Severely immunocompromised
  • Cystic fibrosis who have either 1) manifestations of severe lung disease or 2) weight-for-length <10th percentile
  • American Indian or Alaska Native children

How effective is the infant RSV vaccine?

Extremely effective! As an example, the VISION Multi-Site Network (160 emergency departments and 131 hospitals) showed the RSV vaccine was 63% effective at preventing RSV-associated emergency department visits and 79% effective at preventing RSV-associated hospitalization.

How quickly does the infant RSV vaccine work? How long does the protection last?

The antibodies in the infant RSV vaccine start working right away, and provide protection within hours of administration. The protection lasts for at least 5 months.

Does Modern Pediatrics recommend the infant RSV vaccine?

Yes! We join our colleagues at the FDA, CDC, and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in strongly recommending the infant RSV vaccine for all eligible patients.

Is Modern Pediatrics offering the infant RSV vaccine?

Yes! We will be offering the vaccine for eligible infants starting October 1.

What is the cost of the infant RSV vaccine?

The vaccine is covered by insurance for babies who are eligible, and our reimbursement rate was nearly 100% last year! In the rare situation where a patient is outside of the eligibility guidelines, and insurance denies the claim, the cost is roughly $500 out of pocket. If the patient is outside of these eligibility guidelines but is willing to pay out of pocket for it, we kindly request that this be scheduled with our partner pharmacy, Martin’s Wellness Pharmacy, here

I received the adult RSV vaccine (Abrysvo) while I was pregnant. Should my baby still get the infant dose?

Per the AAP, "Babies born to mothers who get RSV vaccine at least 2 weeks before delivery will have protection and, in most cases, should not need an RSV immunization later."

I'm pregnant with my second child, but I received the adult RSV vaccine (Abrysvo) during my first pregnancy. Am I eligible to get the adult RSV vaccine during this pregnancy as well?

If a Mom received the RSV vaccine during a previous pregnancy, they are not eligible to receive the RSV vaccine during subsequent pregnancies. In this case, it's important for your child to receive the infant RSV vaccine as soon as possible after birth.
